Early in the morning, we started with a skiff and kayak exploration on the Zapote River. Among the vegetation we found different species of birds: blue-fronted jacamar, black-collared hawks, yellow-hooded blackbirds, and great egrets. We even saw some Saki monkeys, a lance-headed snake, and a species of anteater, the tamandua. Our kayakers had a wonderful time being so close to nature!
We came back for breakfast and then got ready for a very interesting walk in the forest on the Zapote Trail. This area gets flooded during the rainy season, but the land is exposed in the dry season and welcomed us. The roots of the ficus are outstanding and can readily adapt to change. We found leaf cutter ants, which are incredibly organized. They amazed us with their ability to carry more than several times their own weight! The hike took us along a very different ecosystem: the deep jungle.
Back onboard the Delfin II, it was lesson time. If you come to Peru, you have to learn how to prepare a traditional pisco sour! The deal: If you get in the bar and prepare your own pisco, the drink is on the house.
In the afternoon we visited Supay Caño. On skiffs or kayaks, we explored the area and got a last glimpse of the river with beautiful reflection of trees in the water. We came back to start our navigation back to Nauta. We had still a long way to go. The reserve lay behind us with its animals and plants, along with the magic of the Amazon.
