A beautiful calm and relatively cool morning opened our expedition today. We had a persistent drizzle rain that did not stop us from exploring the area. After breakfast as the rain decreased its intensity, we went to explore Supay Caño by skiff boats. Wildlife is usually very active after the rain, for critters came out to eat later in the day. We were very lucky for we saw many bird species like flycatchers, nighthawks, herons, kites, tanagers, parrots, etc. We even spotted a couple of the rarely seen dusky titi monkeys high up in the canopy. In the afternoon the sun was shining and we had a beautiful visit to Puerto Miguel. We admired the giant water lilies and paid a visit to the largest and most diverse handcrafts market in this side of the Ucayali River. At sunset, reluctantly, we came back onboard with our minds and spirits filled with all the new adventures and feelings that the Upper Amazon left in our lives.

Delfin II
Yarapa River, Amazonas Village, Peru
Leaving Delfin II at 06:00 for our morning skiff ride, we explored the Yarapa River and monkeys were everywhere! We saw common wooly monkeys, monk saki monkeys, and common squirrel monkeys. We weren’t monkeying around! In addition to the monkeys there were woodpeckers galore! We photographed crimson-crested, yellow-tufted, and cream-colored woodpeckers as they were busily hammering away at trees and termite nests. Our afternoon was spent at Amazonas Village getting an introduction to life along the river. We enjoyed demonstrations of food preparation, basketmaking with palm fibers, and hand-dying with local plants to give the baskets vibrant colors. We also had an introduction to Minga Peru, a group serving 40 different communities in this area. Our evening was topped off with a toast to the beginning of the actual Amazon River, where the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers converge. Salud!
