Haines Day is always a favorite aboard National Geographic Sea Bird. With relatively mild weather, amazing nature, and many things to do in town, Haines truly does have something for everyone. Because of this amazing variety, our guests split off and went forth to engage in the activities of their choosing. The town looked especially welcoming today, with bright pink fireweed in bloom all over the shore, and three bald eagles looking for fish as we shuttled into the harbor.
Our most ambitious hikers got up early to summit Mount Riley, a
challenging yet beautiful hike that ends with panoramic views above the trees.
Others chose to go on a fly-fishing excursion, tailored to experienced
fishermen as well as novices. The rest of our guests spent the morning floating
down the Chilkat River, guided by locals who expertly maneuvered their
inflatable rafts along the shallow waterway.
The afternoon brought even more adventures! Some guests went on a cycling tour to take in more of the area’s amazing nature, and others went for a hike at Battery Point through a beautiful stretch of forest. But the town itself was the highlight for many, with its eclectic mix of shops and dining. Haines is home to a brewery, a distillery, and a mead and cider tasting room.
After a full day in town, we weighed anchor once more, and enjoyed dinner as we cruised through glassy seas under sunny skies. The night was rounded out by an entertaining game of trivia hosted by naturalist Frankie. We can’t wait to explore Tracy Arm tomorrow!
