Peninsula de Osa

We started our Thanksgiving Day by disembarking early morning in Caletas Private Reserve, located in Bahia Drake. This is a protected area which functions as a buffer zone for Corcovado National Park, the largest park in the country. We split into three groups and went out on nature walks and one group went horseback riding.

At the beginning of our walks, we heard our naturalists say, “Watch out! We see Eciton burchelii (army ants), the most feared ant in the rain forest!” When we looked down, we saw millions of ants carpeting the forest floor. Luckily, our guests were rewarded by an abundance of antbirds such as the bicolored antbird, chestnut-backed antbird, and black-cheeked ant-tanager. Scarlet macaws also flew overhead, and we could hear monkeys howling in the forest.

The Sea Voyager repositioned at lunch, and we ventured to Corcovado National Park, one of Central America’s most renowned parks. Once anchored safely at San Pedrillo Rangers Station, we had the chance to walk on the park’s prolific trails, perfect for observing nature. Some of us went to the most incredible waterfall, where we were able to swim in refreshing waters. Others hiked along the coast, where the wonders of this fabulous region were revealed.

Back on the ship we all enjoyed a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner.
