Southern Isabela Island
The Galápagos Islands are a very special place on the planet, there is no doubt about that!
Daily, our reports about encounters with whales, penguins, sea lions and other wild animals travel far distances to reach you all, just to give you an idea of what you might experience when your turn to visit the islands comes. It is very hard at times to pick what to say in these reports, as we don’t want to create false expectations in our future visitors. Luckily, I did not have that problem today!
A simple walk to the outside corridors of the ship gave me one of the highlights of the day, the sunrise! What a marvelous place to admire the simple everyday action of the sun re-appearing at the horizon. Some might say that you don’t have to travel far distances to admire that, but what about if you add the clear view of three imposing shield-shaped volcanoes at the horizon, and a soft, golden shade of light upon them, characteristic of the sunrises in Galápagos? Then, we are talking about one of the most fulfilling and spiritual moments of your voyage!
This is how the day started off the shores of Isabela Island, where volcanoes are found all around us. The later walk with all the wildlife we encountered along the way was only an extra bonus to the day. Large land iguanas and a giant tortoise were also part of the rewards for everyone who participated on the walks. The swimming off the beach, as perfect as it was, gave us all the chance to enjoy once again the incredibly rich marine ecosystem of the Galápagos. As for the afternoon, flamingoes were definitely the highlight! Who would have thought that these gorgeous-looking birds could be found in remote areas filled with only lava flows? Well, I guess the Galápagos is a lot more than just imagining things and situations; this is a place were the unexpected could be easily found…
