Columbia River Gorge

Today’s photograph is of Oregon’s incomparable Multnomah Falls, 620 feet high. It may no longer be the state’s most visited site, but surely it is its most photographed. Autumn adds a splash of orange and red to the evergreen world surrounding the falls, one of many scenic gems of the Columbia River Gorge.

We began our day in The Dalles, Oregon. Our itinerary included stops at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, Rowena Crest, and Hood River. Most guests chose to walk a portion of the historic Columbia River Highway, originally opened in 1916 and renowned for its scenic vistas. The coming of Interstate 84 doomed the old road, and significant portions of it fell into ruin. Our hikes took place on a beautifully restored section of the old road used today only by walkers and bicyclists. Our afternoon included a cruise on the Columbia Gorge from Hood River to Cascade Locks, our stop for a brief motor coach trip to Multnomah Falls. As darkness fell we entered the locks at Bonneville Dam, the last of sixteen dams and locks we have traversed during our voyage in the wake of Lewis and Clark.
