Eastern Washington & Oregon

Today is the first morning on board the Sea Bird’s last Columbia and Snake River voyage of the season. We are off to a great start as the morning sun begins to rise, assuring us of a beautiful day. Having navigated through Bonneville and The Dalles locks during the night, we are eagerly anticipating transiting through the John Day lock in the daylight. Spectators enthusiastically admire the changing landscape and vegetation, as we cruise eastward through the Cascade Mountain Range.

From the bow we watch the sparse patches of western juniper, (once referred to as the cedar by Lewis and Clark), and the Lombardy poplar add splashes of color as we cruise up the Columbia River. The colors diminish as the soil becomes nearly devoid of moisture, dramatically changing the scenery. Off the stern is an equally dramatic view of Mount Hood sitting on the horizon.

A bald eagle is spotted as we cruise through the Blaylock Islands just before approaching the McNary lock. Upon reaching the lock we are intrigued with the ingenuity of the operation, and the function of the fish ladders, and become completely enthralled.

To compliment the morning’s high spirits many partake in the therapeutic and restorative benefits of a wellness treatment. The soothing atmosphere and time to reflect evokes rejuvenation of the mind, body and spirit. The day is completed with an eloquently prepared wine tasting while cruising thru the Columbia Valley vineyards.
