Clearwater River & Hell’s Canyon

The sun’s rays melt away the evening’s frost, while simultaneously casting an illusive, dusty-rose hue on the fog, which spirals down the tranquil waters of the Snake River. The Sea Bird will remain docked here in Clarkston for the entire day while we explore the region either by jet boat or by coach. This afternoon we will reunite at the Nez Perce National Historic Park Museum before returning to the ship.

“It all comes to life in an overwhelming experience” states one of the guests traveling on board the “Lewis and Clark” motor coach. The historical expert, Lin Laughy, possesses immense knowledge and ability to convey the stories of the Corp of Discovery. His words captivate his listeners and connect them with the history. The barrier between the historic past and the present are erased and one feels as though he is standing among the Nez Perce.

Wildlife is viewed in abundance for those traveling by jet boat into Hell’s Canyon. There are grazing mule deer, two large groups of Rocky Mountain big horn sheep, twenty-five or more wild turkeys under a shade tree and the unmistakable evidence of a bear’s earlier presence when we stopped on shore. Capitan John and his First Mate Boyd share their knowledge of the geology of the region as we view this awesome and unique landscape.

Enriched by today’s experiences we are eager to share our stories. All gather in the lounge for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before dinner.
