Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

Towering hundreds of feet above the ocean level, Margerie Glacier is one of the beauties of Alaska. This glacier is not retreating like most others in the world, and daily entertains thousands of visitors to the Park, like us. Right at the border with Canada, Glacier Bay awed us with the many glaciers, the Fairweather Mountain Range, and South Marble Island, where we had the opportunity of seeing a great number of seabirds, such as puffins, pigeon gillemots, cormorants, mergansers, goldeneyes, oystercatchers and many species of gulls, including the kittiwakes. The giant Steller's Sea Lions welcomed us with their low rumbling sounds, as they lay upon the rounded rocks of the northern end of the island. During our sailing in the bay we saw a humpback whale, as well as a series of small pods of harbor porpoises, At night we had a brisk hike around a forest at Barttlet Cove, and attended an interesting biological talk by the park rangers. Quite a way to enjoy a beautiful weather day at Glacier Bay National Park!
