Isabela and Fernandina Islands
We started our day very early in the morning circumnavigating Roca Redonda. This interesting volcanic formation is located some miles away from the north of Isabela Island. This famous rock constitutes the top of an eroded and huge underwater volcano located, basically, in the middle of nowhere. The rock itself is at the same time a harbour for hundreds of seabirds. It was even described by Hermann Melville (“Moby Dick’s” author) in a book that he also wrote called “The Enchanted Islands.”
Later in the day we went on a Zodiac ride along the shoreline of Ecuador volcano. The landscape in this area is spectacular. Majestic shield volcanoes and young lava flows are merged with the deep blue-coloured waters that surround this area. During the ride we observed endemic animals to the Galápagos Islands such as the flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins and Galápagos fur seals. Right after lunch, we went to snorkel along the coastline of Fernandina Island. Green Pacific sea turtles were admired at their best. Later in the afternoon we enjoyed the beauty and wilderness of Punta Espinosa. Large marine iguanas were seen in large numbers. Some of them were basking placidly on top of artistic pieces of driftwood. A great day finally came to an end, our hearts and minds filled with new emotions and memories.
