Floreana, Santa Maria and Charles are three different names for same island, found at the southernmost tip of the archipelago. The islands were named and renamed at several different moments in history, by successive waves of visitors. These started with British names given first by pirates and buccaneers, then by whalers and fur sealers. Later Spanish names were given by the early settlers, and the official names eventually given to the islands about fifty years after they were annexed by Ecuador, in 1893. The island group was renamed “Archipelago of Columbus” in honor of the discoverer of the Americas, and all the new island names follow this theme. After the pre-breakfast outing at Post Office Bay, a whaling tradition over 200 hundred years old, we continued our course toward our snorkeling site, Champion Islet, one of the parasitic cones just offshore from Floreana Island. It was very beautiful: we saw a lot of tropical fish, and the sea lions of course were waiting for us! Over 20 young, playful and very curious pups were having fun with our guests, and some of the boldest of them were even nipping at our flippers. The native sea lion of the area has recently been declared an endemic species of the islands (Zalophus wollebaecki) and are without doubt the stars of the archipelago.
