Floreana

What a sky! I could see that it would be a sunny morning when I awoke. We were anchored in Post Office Bay. Calm seas reflected a brilliant morning sun that topped the hills of the island. By breakfast time, postcards had been dropped off and many collected for delivery. In the next few months, these missives would travel in the suitcases of our guests all over the world in search of their owners.

Champion also sparkled invitingly. The Floreana mockingbirds cooperated by just showing themselves in their speckled finery, atop the Floreana prickly pear cacti, on Floreana lava and layers of ash. Down under the blue waters, king angelfish darted while parrotfish glowed and dusky chubs grouped. Sea lions provided the entertainment. One young male cruised alongside us. He was blasé of our presence, yet obviously reluctant to leave; his eyes half-closed, drawn back to our noise and splashes.

Point Cormorant proved beyond a doubt that Galápagos provides an array of intense colour. When we arrived alongside the brackish water lagoon, the two dozen or so flamingos we saw were restless and focused on each other. Courtship moves appeared; toe-pointing, wing flashing and finally mating! It seemed so impossible with those long legs.

The honking of the flamingos, the twittering burbles of the whimbrels and calls of finches filled our day.
