Floreana Island

The morning was perfect to disembark at Post Office Bay. Some of us took postcards and letters to deposit in the famous barrel by the bay; others picked up postcards from the barrel and were surprised by some of the destinations of letters for delivery. All participants were happily continuing the tradition of whalers that began hundreds of years ago. One of our fellow Naturalists told us stories about whalers and the people that lived on the island a long time ago. This island was also called the “mystery island” because of all the people that disappeared in the past.

After this excursion we sailed to a young volcano called Champion where we enjoyed water activities like glass-bottom boats and snorkeling. This island is one of my favorite places to snorkel because the clarity of the water and the amount of fish that flourish around the island are amazing! Some of us even saw whitetip reef sharks and sea turtles!

In the afternoon we also had the opportunity to kayak along the bay of Point Cormorant. The best part of the day came late in the afternoon when we disembarked, and saw a great colony of Galápagos flamingoes. They were all together glowing with their pink coloration while accompanied by the reddish color of the sunset. This gave us pause to witness a spectacular moment.

We went back on board leaving the “mystery island” in the past with preparation to cross the equator line tomorrow.
