Bartolomé Island

Our first full day in the Galápagos Islands! With an optional early morning wake up call, we climbed three hundred and seventy five wooden steps to the summit of this eroded crater. Bartolomé Island offers one of the best landscapes of the archipelago. Marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs, herons and sea lions welcomed us at the landing spot. Lava lizards, painted locusts and a set of special pioneer plants were also the highlight of this first outing. Once back on board and after a succulent breakfast, we were briefed on the snorkeling arts, at last we were fully geared and ready for the second morning outing. Our Zodiacs wet landed at the beach and we walked across the dunes. Nesting sea turtles, shore birds and a juvenile Galápagos hawk were the attractions this time.

Our brave snorkelers shared the blue waters with the Galápagos penguins, colorful fish and a couple of whitetip sharks. After a fabulous typical Ecuadorian lunch we had a presentation by our Expedition Leader on board and then we disembarked again for the afternoon adventure.

The afternoon stroll along the shore line of Puerto Egas on Santiago Island was full of surprises; big marine iguanas, shore birds, pelicans, blue-footed boobies and more. We were all mesmerized by a fabulous bright sunset which oriented a baby sea turtle that was making its way to the sea after leaving its nest. This was such a great experience for all of us and made for an unforgettable day in paradise!
