Floreana Island
Today’s visits were full of surprises; we started our day in Floreana Island visiting a very historical place called Post Office Bay, used a long time ago by whalers as a mailing system. Nowadays it is a place where you can exchange your postcards: the tradition says that if you find a letter or a postcard with an address near your town you should take it home with you… but only if you are willing to hand deliver it!
Later in the morning we went to an islet called Champion where our guests were offered many activities such as the glass bottom boat ride, deep water snorkeling, and a Zodiac ride around the islet looking for the elusive Floreana mockingbird.
During these activities some of the highlights were the schools of tropical fish that we could see feeding and sea lions passing underneath the glass of the glass bottom boat. In our ride aboard our fleet of Zodiacs around Champion we could see many nesting red billed tropic birds along the cliffs, lots of Galápagos shearwaters feeding and we concluded our mission after we found some Floreana mockingbirds close to our boat.
In the afternoon some of us went kayaking along a nice little bay called cormorant point; after having seen sea birds fishing and many Sally Lightfoot crabs on the rocks we wanted to explore more deeply this magic place so shortly afterwards we landed on a beautiful brown-green beach and did a mile walk to the other side of cormorant point. Along the trail we encountered a lot of greater flamingos in a big brackish water lagoon; Once we arrived to the other side of cormorant point, we came across a big white sandy beach that is a common nesting spot of pacific green sea turtles, we could see many in the water apparently trying to mate, we were very lucky also in finding some sharks swimming along the beach.
