Humboldt Current − Juan Fernandez Islands & Mainland Chile

The National Geographic Explorer continued on her steady course back towards mainland Chile through long swells crested with breeze-blown spray. Days such as these provide the perfect opportunity for guests to relax in the Wellness Spa, review their photographs, or scan the seas for birds and marine wildlife.

These rich waters support great numbers of seabirds with some species endemic to the archipelago we left behind, however highlights today had to be four species of albatross; black-browed, Buller’s, royal and wandering. These impressive birds soared over the waves with ease and provided great photo opportunities.

Our guests were entertained throughout the day by stimulating presentations by our expedition staff. Magnus Forsberg spoke on the sensitive issue of global whaling concerns and its impact in South America and Anthropologist Olga Stavrakis talked to the audience about the Inca Empire. After an afternoon treat of fresh warm scones with cream and jam, our guests were ready for another Chilean wine tasting session under the guidance of expert Max Morales.

I spent the majority of the day editing and compiling footage taken on one particular dive at the Juan Fernandez Islands. In the evening I presented a short film showing the underwater acrobatics of the endemic Juan Fernandez Fur Seals. Dr. John Francis from National Geographic provided his expert insight into the behavior of these professional divers. It was a pleasure to bring these underwater sights into the comfort of the ship’s lounge.

Our day was capped off nicely by a preview of Josh Newman’s video chronicle. We were reminded once again of all we have seen and accomplished in such a short time.
