Today, our expedition took us to the breathtaking Dynjandi Waterfall, nestled deep in the remote Westfjords of Iceland. Dynjandi’s name means thunderous or resounding, and it lives up to its reputation as it cascades 100 meters, resembling a beautiful bridal veil. At its widest point it spans 30 meters, widening to an impressive 60 meters at the bottom. The hike to Dynjandi took no more than 20 minutes but the elevation gain of approximately 200 meters provided stunning views. Volunteers had created a rocky path in 1996, making the ascent manageable for most. It’s no surprise that this natural wonder has been preserved as a protected monument since 1981!
As we entered Ísafjarðardjúp on our way to Vigur, the weather greeted us with stunning sunshine, and the sea was completely calm, making it a perfect Icelandic summer day.
Vigur Island is a haven for birdwatchers, with numerous bird species breeding here in the summertime. We even got the chance to get well acquainted with the feisty arctic terns! With only 3 inhabitants all year round, Vigur has a family-run eider farm about which we learned everything. Thank you, Felicity and Gísli for a lovely afternoon!
