Today we started our journey sailing near the Croatian island of Vis. Chief Mate John held an introduction to sailing on the spanker deck as Captain Komakin sent the crew to sailing stations. They dazzled us as they climbed the riggings and let loose the sails. After meeting our expedition team and our cultural guide Petra, Jose Calvo gave a presentation on photo composition. We then were surprised with an impromptu photo safari, loading into Zodiacs and driving around the ship, to take advantage of the photo opportunity with the Sea Cloud under full sail.
After a delicious lunch we made our way into the Renaissance town of Hvar. With the heat remaining steady the guides gave us an in-depth look at this medieval town, with a visit to the Franciscan Monastery and the bustling courtyard with plenty of shops and cafes to admire. Some were even able to take a dip for their first Adriatic swim.
Once all back on board the captain’s cocktail party was just getting started and he had the chance to share some encouraging words about the adventure that lies ahead and introduce some of his crew. We all had a toast and went downstairs for yet another outstanding Sea Cloud meal.
With our bellies full and our first taste of the Dalmatian Coast complete, we’ll make our way to Korcula to take in more of Croatia.
