The last day of our expedition brought us to the Vestmannaeyjar. While circumnavigating Surtsey, the youngest of the islands in the archipelago, we were lucky enough to observe several groups of killer whales. Calm seas and sunshine allowed us to enjoy lunch outside as we arrived in Heimaey.
In the afternoon, we went ashore and made a difficult choice between hiking Eldfell Mountain (‘Fire Mountain’), a volcanic cone that formed in the last eruption on the island in 1973, or enjoying a panoramic tour of the island to learn more about its history and enjoy stunning views.
