We woke up early in the morning, and National Geographic Endeavour II was already anchored at Urbina Bay on Isabela Island. Formed by extensive lava flows from six volcanos, Isabela is the biggest island in the archipelago. While we walked along a trail at Urbina Bay, we found land iguanas and Galapagos giant tortoises that come all the way from Alcedo Volcano for food. The land iguanas and giant tortoises were resting and heating up their bodies in the sun. Both species are endemic to the islands, meaning they are only found here in the Galapagos.
In the afternoon, National Geographic Endeavour II sailed toward the north of Isabela Island to Tagus Cove. In this wonderful spot, we hiked around a saltwater lagoon until we reached the trail’s peak, which offered us an outstanding volcanic landscape.
We enjoyed kayaking inside the cove and Zodiac tours along the coast of Isabela. We kept our eyes open for flightless cormorants and Galapagos penguins as we enjoyed a great view of Fernandina Island.
