A brilliant night of bioluminescence billowing from the bow brought us bright and early to the shallow bar beckoning us into the beautiful bay outside of Tracy Arm Fords Terror Wilderness—the site our day’s foray into the wet and wild of Southeast Alaska.
The misty fjord overflowed with vernal streams pouring from the thousand-foot cliffs above as we sailed over teal waters filled with glacial till reflecting the diffuse, rainy light. The bridge team maneuvered us into stunning views of rushing water falls as bergy bits passed us by before arriving at our protected point—all under the supervision of a darling black bear perched high up the cliffs and outstanding in its field. After a delicious lunch, we launched ourselves into our Zodiacs to brave the cold in search of South Sawyer Glacier, our final tidewater glacier of the voyage.
The fore bay was filled with growlers and brash from a large collapse of the glacial face—the plentiful harbor seals seemed to enjoy the added complications to the icy scenery. Warmed by spicy cocoa and our return to the ship’s warm embrace, we set our sights on the town that fish built—Petersburg in the morning, onward!
