Santiago Island has been under restoration for about 30 years now, with amazing positive results for its flora and fauna. In 2001, we eradicated feral pigs and in 2005, we finally declared Santiago Island free from goats. That amazing effort reached an impressive level with the breeding program of Santiago giant tortoises.
A few years ago, we repatriated Galapagos land iguanas to Santiago, and last year we had our first record of a baby iguana born in the wild. These are just a few of the amazing restoration programs carried out to preserve the native and endemic flora and fauna of Galapagos.
