We spent the first full day of our trip in Puerto Magdalena, a small fishing village on Isla Magdalena in Bahia Magdalena. In the morning we explored the mangroves in our Zodiacs, getting up close to these amazing salt tolerant plants and searching for birds sheltering among them. Back on the ship, naturalist Frankie gave a presentation on birds.
After lunch we came ashore at Puerto Magdalena. Some of us rode fat-tire bikes along the beach, while others chose to stretch their legs on a hike. We watched shorebirds pick through the sand at low tide and examined seashells along the vast shore. Those of us who opted for a more adventurous hike, trekked up a cañada full of beautiful cacti and were rewarded with a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. Many of the cacti on Isla Magdalena are endemic to a very small area in Baja California Sur, so it was a special treat to see these rare plants.
In Puerto Magdalena proper, our gracious host, Chejo, entertained us in his restaurant on the beach. Over delicious food and cold drinks, he told us what life is like in this small fishing village.
We made our way back to the ship for dinner after a fun day of exploration. Following the meal, Naturalist Sofia gave a presentation in the lounge on whales. Tonight, we look forward to a good night’s sleep in anticipation of another action-packed day in the sun!
