We spent the entirety of our Tuesday in Puerto Magdalena, a small fishing village on Isla Magdalena.
Exploring both the shoreline and the interior of the island, we went for hikes and fat-tire bike rides. One of our hiking trails introduced us to the area’s endemic plants, such as Magdalena prickly pear and Santa Margarita agave. This trail ended with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. Another interesting highlight was an osprey nest atop a gray whale skeleton.
We also got to know Puerto Magdalena a bit better by visiting Jose Chejo’s restaurant in the center of town. Over drinks and guacamole, he gave us some insight into his life on the island.
We returned to the ship for cocktail hour and dinner, followed by a presentation from Naturalist Jeff about gray whales. Tomorrow, we travel north for another day of adventure.
