After leaving Chuuk (Truk Lagoon) we motored to Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. Docking at Kolonia inside the lagoon, guests from National Geographic Resolution embarked on a tour of the Nan Madol Archaeological site on the other side of the island. This site is a wonder of human effort as columnar basalt was transported from a location adjacent to the dock all the way to the other side of the island to build the temples and grave sites literally in and on the sea. The builders used no mortar between the massive basaltic blocks and beams, just the weight of these stones to keep everything in place. Amazing!
After lunch we went with a local operator to 2 different snorkel sites inside the lagoon. We spent the afternoon in the company of a myriad of reef fish and beautiful hard and soft corals. The waters were crystal clear, warm, and inviting as we all enjoyed this magnificent lagoon. Back on the ship we sailed out of the narrow entrance to the lagoon and headed just south of east for our next adventure!
