Today finds us in the scenic fishing port of Petersburg. This community reflects its Norwegian heritage in many ways, from the beautifully decorated houses, to Norwegian festivals, to the Sons of Norway Hall. The town is quaint and the residents are very friendly. This was literally “the town that fish built.” Many fishermen came to Petersburg to earn a living because of its proximity to rich fishing grounds, and it became one of the largest commercial fishing ports in Southeast Alaska.
Across Fredrick Sound is Kupreanof Island, where we enjoyed a lovely walk through the temperate rainforest to a bog. It was a stunningly beautiful day with mild temperatures and bright sunshine. Our guests saw some of the unusual plants that have adapted to life in the acidic bog, including two carnivorous species. Along with the plants we saw five species of birds and two Sitka black-tailed deer.
