We spent the morning in Oban with a series of walks. Robin led a fast-paced walk to the ruins of Dunollie Castle, the home to the clan MacDougall. Anna took several guests on a shorter walk to McCaig's Folly, a circular tower above the town built by wealthy banker John Stuart McCaig as a monument to his family. McCaig hired unemployed stone masons to build the monument starting in 1895, and construction stopped when he died in 1902. The tower provided lovely views of the town despite the rain.
Afterward, we set sail for Corpach to start our journey on the Caledonian Canal. After lunch, our historian/naturalist, Robin, gave a presentation on The Road to Culloden. In Corpach, several guests went kayaking on Loch Linnhe while others went to visit Glenfinnan Monument and Viaduct. The monument commemorates where clansmen gathered to pledge their support for Bonnie Prince Charlie in his unsuccessful Jacobite rebellion. The viaduct was made famous by the Harry Potter movies and is very photogenic. Two trains passed over the viaduct during our visit!
