Fog obscured the sunrise and shoreline in Magdalena Bay but the blows of passing gray whales could still be heard in the early morning. After breakfast, the Zodiacs, loaded with eager guests, cut through the calm waters of the bay in search of the whales that had taunted everyone from behind the curtain of mist. As the bay opened up, we saw mangroves lining the banks and sleepy frigate birds resting on the branches.

Slowly, whale blows came into view and as the boats crept closer, the gigantic mammals could be seen breaking the surface to breathe. To everyone’s delight, the gray whales didn’t move away but instead came within arm’s reach to investigate the inflatable boats. One by one. the whales moved between patiently waiting boats, seeking a pat here and a scratch there. Finally, lunch called the explorers back to National Geographic Sea Bird.

With bellies full, guests mounted fat-tire bikes for a ride on the beach along the open Pacific Ocean. There were treasures of shells and even a friendly coyote to entertain the riders. We finished the bike ride in time to watch the sun set over beautiful Magdalena Bay and hear the sounds of coyotes howling. Then the local band, Los Coyotes de Magdalena, entertained with beautiful songs.
