Today we visited one of my favorite places on our itinerary: Iles de Saintes, which is part of an archipelago belonging to France’s Département d’Outre-Mer. The French maritime jurisdiction of Guadalupe is comprised of seven larger volcanic islands but just two of them have permanent residents.
We headed for Fort Napoleon, located on a mountain top, for an impressive view of the island. There, we heard all about naval history from elite historian Ton Heffernan. Then we had the option of either visiting the town or going for a snorkel at a nearby beach.
Back aboard, with sails set, we learned about the reef corals and Sea Cloud’s impressive history.
