National Geographic Sea Bird pulled into port in Haines, Alaska bright and early on the morning of Saturday, June 8th, ready for adventure! Sunny and 75°, it was an incredibly beautiful day in Southeast Alaska.
Our day in Haines included several activities for guests to explore the nature and culture of Southeast Alaska. In the morning, guests had the option of a flyfishing trip, with the possibility of catching Dolly Varden (amongst other fish). Our most adventurous guests disembarked for a hike to the summit of Mt. Riley at 1,760 feet, which included incredible views of town and the surrounding rivers. Guests enjoyed a serene river float starting near the Indigenous town of Klukwan and down the Chilkat River, witnessing coastal brown bears, bald eagles, and incredible landscapes.
In the afternoon, guests had options that included a guided bike tour through town, flyfishing, and hikes. On the Battery Point Hike, led by naturalists Leah Santini and Linda Burback, guests embarked on Zodiacs for a cruise towards the starting point of the hike while witnessing a humpback whale along the way. Once on land, guests enjoyed learning about all kinds of wildflowers along the coastline, as well as about the old growth forest of Southeast Alaska on a beautiful Alaskan afternoon.
