Golfo Dulce, Casa Orquídeas & Esquinas River

Good morning Costa Rica!!! Day begins with a session of yoga and stretching by the sun deck. Other guests are taking their time to look at a beautiful sunrise with an aromatic cup of coffee while we were inside of the calmed waters of the Golfo Dulce. The immigration authorities had done the paper work to register our entrance to the country; once they finished, we dropped the anchor nearby the Esquinas River. All the kayaks were ready when a pod of Bottled-nosed dolphins start to play right next to the Sea Voyager.

In short time, when the tide was still low, our guests, some kayaking, some on the zodiac cruises, had the opportunity to watch the first group of birds on the banks of these shallow waters. All of the birds were looking for mollusks and bivalves to eat…whimbrels, white ibises, tricolored herons, spotted sandpipers and few great egrets had their own feast.

Inside the lush mangroves, the different species of trees and particularly the roots shapes, hosted a variety of crabs and small birds making us realize the importance of this unique ecosystem for the coastal and marine environments.

The day was very hot, and a jump from the stern refreshed us all after our efforts during the morning’s adventures, which were highly rewarded by all the wildlife we saw.

After lunch we move to a place known for its beauty: Casa Orquídeas. This garden, located in a place only accessible by boat, has an enormous diversity of native orchids, heliconias, ornamentals, fruit trees and medicinal plants. That diversity gives us an excellent chance to cover several topics about the flora of one of the richest places on Earth, the Neotropics. For those who also love photography, this place represents a paradise. Walking alone and silent through the surroundings is a treat to the senses, and the capturing of images along this walk is a dream come true for many photographers.

Several groups walked along the clean trails, looking for the symphony of colors in this garden. Many of the plants attract a lot of bird species and, once again, exotic and unique types increased the success we experienced on our nature walk. To enhance this fact more, some scarlet macaws and chesnut-mandibled toucans showed up, giving an exhibition of elegance.

To conclude a privileged journey, a little bit of fun and relaxation was a touch of gold. Banana boat riders and swimmers enjoyed the warm and smooth waters of the Golfo Dulce, which gave us the chance to contemplate what is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the country we enter today, the country of the rich coast…Costa Rica!!!
