Granito de Oro, Coiba National Park

I woke up early in the morning, as the light coming through the porthole in my cabin was very strong and hit me right on the face. I don’t have any curtains on it, and I don’t know anybody in his right mind that would want to block the view that I had this morning when I gave a peek to the outside. We were still navigating, but I could clearly see where we were heading, Granito de Oro and its magical land.

It was not until after breakfast that we landed on this little piece of heaven on earth; its gigantic population of hermit crabs were already very active and looking for food, making it seems as the earth itself was moving under our feet. Deep blue waters were surroundings us, protecting its most precious treasure, the coral reef itself. This healthy ecosystem gave us a great snorkeling outing, as we enjoyed for hours the infinite amount of reef fish that inhabit this area.

As if the snorkeling were not enough, kayaking was another of the popular options chosen by our guests during this morning, so they fully explored the surroundings of this minute island.

Later in the morning we repositioned the ship to Coiba Island, the largest of all the islands surrounding the National Park that carries the same name. The Island of Coiba was formerly a prison, and that prevented the development of any infrastructure that could destroy such a beautiful ecosystem. Only the small facilities used by the guards remain, being used nowadays for the park rangers assigned to take care of this National Park.

It was precisely here where our BBQ lunch took place, with the best view that you could possibly imagine. Our nature walks to observe birds and wildlife were done after lunch, but there was one particular encounter that will stick in my mind for awhile and that was to be able to see “Tito,” an eight-foot crocodile that seems to like this area. He simply came out of the water in response to some of the motion that he saw nearby his feeding area.

After this encounter, I was extra careful when checking our “cabin tag board system” as I did not want to forget anybody accidentally, although I know Tito would have been happy of such a mistake!

With the sun setting at the horizon we called it a day, and started the recaps, where more information was imparted to the lucky guests traveling on board the Sea Voyager during this week.
