Corcovado National Park and Caletas Reserve
After yesterday’s heavy rain, it was quite a relief to find great weather today. Not only did the rain stay away, but it wasn’t very hot either! We started our day by anchoring at the Caletas Reserve, part of the buffer zone of Corcovado National Park.
We were pleasantly surprised. Just before we started our walks into the forest, we were graced with the visit of a couple of Chestnut mandibled toucans, Costa Rica’s largest toucan. These two individuals, with their characteristic huge bills, were probing into the leaves, looking for something good to eat. This special sight was followed immediately by a troop of white faced capuchin monkeys. They came down from the trees, getting closer to us, quite impervious to our presence and also in search of their breakfast.
After lunch we started repositioning the Sea Voyager, while making a longer detour closer to Caño Island on route to our next destination for the day, the San Pedrillo sector of Corcovado National Park. Again our efforts where rewarded by enjoying a show put up by a couple of humpback whales breaching from the ocean.
Once we arrived to San Pedrillo, in Corcovado, we couldn’t believe our good fortune! Just as we walked by the first patch of trees on our way to the park ranger’s station to register our visit, we observed on top of a palm frond a Tamandua Anteater taking a nap. This was an unusual animal in an unusual place, almost as if it had been purposefully placed there.
Our group then divided. Some went into the forest in search of the San Pedrillo waterfall while others took the trail to Rio Pargo.
Crocodiles in the ocean, spider monkeys, white hawks, peregrine falcons, agoutis… A successful and enjoyable day indeed!
