Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
Our second day in Costa Rica and it seems as though things just keep getting better in this tropical weather! Today we had a full day on the Osa Peninsula and it was awesome. To start with we awoke this morning anchored right in front of Corcovado National Park, one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of this country, and thanks to that condition it is still very pristine – a true wilderness place. After breakfast we divided in small groups in order to explore this nice place. Some people went on a waterfall hike and not only did they get a nice picture of the waterfall, but they also got to swim in the river. Along the way they saw great curassows, a pygmy squirrel, and boat-billed herons. Some of us took a much longer waterfall trail with the idea of having a little more exercise and still these walkers got their share of nature with spider monkeys, white-nosed coatis, and bats.
Some others took a nice level walk through the forest and were rewarded with amazing views of a troop of spider monkeys feeding on fig trees. Even the exercise walkers that took a long trail through the forest with the purpose of doing some serious exercise got to see spider monkeys, manakins, scarlet macaws and even the rarely seen white-lipped peccaries.
And that was just the morning! In the afternoon we went ashore for a beach barbeque, and right beside us was spotted a white-throated capuchin monkey that put on quite a nice show, as they moved through the canopy. Then some of us put on our jeans and went for nice horseback ride, while others napped in hammocks and/or took pictures of a small American crocodile trapped in a tide pool.
To end our day nicely we enjoyed a Zodiac cruise up a small river to enjoy the scenery, see some more birds and even to go for a quick dip in the river. What a full day!
