Today the Sea Lion was at sea the entire day and continued transiting the Juan De Fuca Strait entering the Pacific Ocean heading off the west coast of the Olympic Peninsula towards its final destination of Astoria, Oregon. Along the transit many seabirds were identified including Sooty Shearwaters (Puffinus griseus), Pink-footed Shearwaters (Puffinus creatopus), common Murres (Uria aalge), and California Gulls (Larus californicus). While at sea time was spent wondering, what lies beneath the waves as the ship gently glided over each successive crest and dipped into each trough? Each wavelength was spent contemplating the oceans myriad life forms. For this Ochre Sea Star (Pisaster ochraceus) this scene would be analogous to an all you can eat mussel buffet. The only hope for survival for the mussels is if the sea star happens to randomly move in the opposite direction since sea stars find food by pure chance.
