It was after dark as the Sea Lion entered the picturesque and protected harbor of Victoria. But that made it all the more spectacular. There are no massive skyscrapers here, but instead, many new and well-fashioned hotels, offices, and condominiums, each of which has its own special view of the city. A highlight among them, especially at night, is the Provincial Legislature – the Parliament building as they are called. Outlined in white lights, this massive stone structure and its copper dome reflect the architecture character of this capital city. The stately Empress Hotel and modern Royal British Columbia museum also face the inner harbor and add to the varied face of the city.
We would spend the night here, tied to the dock, and would look forward to tomorrow’s tour of the city, Butchart gardens and the museums, and perhaps high tea at the Empress. This would be in contrast to our sunny and warm cruise around San Juan Island and walk around Friday harbor today. The weather was spectacular for September. We will hope for more of the same tomorrow.
