A picture is worth a thousand words so there is not much more that can be said that our photo does not reveal. Here in San Ignacio lagoon we bid farewell to the California gray whales as they prepare for their long migration north to Alaska, a location rich in food. There they will replenish their energy stores. Tiny embryos implanted in breeding females will begin to grow, and as the seasons change the cycle will renew. Next December the whales will once again return to their calving grounds in the shallow lagoons of the Pacific coast of Baja California. The youngsters born this season are fit and ready for their first excursion into the Pacific. Perhaps we'll see these same whales again next year when we also return to the lagoons of Baja California.
