We then sighted a gray whale. Later, we spent a long afternoon watching sperm whales and bottlenose dolphins. By sunset, we collapsed once aboard our ship, happy and exhausted.

A fabulous first day for this Photo Expedition. After a beautiful sunrise hike on Isla San Esteban, we were greeted at sea by an enormous school of several thousand common dolphins spread out across miles of ocean. The weather was sunny and calm, and we spent hours in their company. There were many adult dolphins traveling with small calves (see photo).
