Astoria

This final day of our voyage “In the Wake of Lewis and Clark” found us at the mouth of the Columbia River. Historically, any month here is a rainy month but November can be depended upon to bring us cold, foggy, rainy days. Not so today. A beautiful rosy sunrise and a brisk east wind heralded blue skies. We cruised out toward the Columbia bar with only a few waves breaking, then turned and headed to Astoria for a day of activity.

The Columbia Maritime Museum, one of the finest in the nation, revealed to us the story of the development of Astoria’s fur trading, fishing, and maritime commerce.  Fort Clatsop showed us the story of the Corps of Discovery spending the winter of 1805-06 there.

We spent the afternoon at Cape Disappointment in the interpretive center. This was followed by a stroll through the deep green coastal forest to a sculpture of a walkway terminating at a small sandy beach. The timing was perfect for sunset over the Pacific Ocean, a fitting end to our expedition. We echo the words of William Clark, “Ocean in view, oh the joy.”
