Le Conte Bay

We began our day with Zodiac cruises among the incredible icebergs of Le Conte Bay. For many years this very active glacier has been calving ice into the fjord and the huge pieces of ice find their way down the bay to the mouth of the Stikine River, where they beach themselves at low tide. To cruise among the many bizarre shapes of the melting bergs is an experience not to be forgotten. Blue ice of many colors and shapes presents itself as the bergs gradually melt.

Bergy bits and growlers along with huge ice bergs pile up in the shallow bay at low tide creating an other- worldly mass of outrageous sculptures. Harbor seals and many species of birds swim or fly around the ice looking for bits of food that the bergs stir up from the bottom.

Occasionally one of the pieces of ice breaks apart with a loud bang adding to the essence of this remarkable seascape. Once the tide rises, all of the ice floats on out of the bay and large icebergs can be found for many miles along the shore.

In the afternoon we cruised past the fishing town of Petersburg enroute to our hike to Lake Harvey on Woewodski Island. During the evening we headed south toward our next destination at Ketchikan, Alaska.
