Lake Eva Trail

This morning the Sea Bird anchored off of a forest trail on the north end of Baranof Island. Once ashore we headed into the rain forest toward a salmon stream that had many pink salmon heading toward their spawning areas. We observed many beautiful Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock along with many other species of plants characteristic of the northern temperate rain forests of southeast Alaska. On one of the hemlock trees we noticed a spectacular fungus that was bright orange in color with yellow undersides. This proved to be one of the easiest of all the fungi to identify due to its bright color. It is known as the Sulfur Shelf or Chicken of the Woods fungus and is a delicious one to eat.

After admiring it and watching the salmon heading upstream to spawn we returned to the ship for a late breakfast and began our journey north towards Glacier Bay National Park.
