The Johns Hopkins Glacier in Southeastern Alaska is considered one of the most magnificent and beautiful of all the glaciers in the area. Oliver and Wilbur, two high peaks, dominate the scene, with the impressive, very active, and advancing glacier at the end of the arm. Our park ranger informed us about the importance of this glacier to harbor seals, where the largest aggregation of females anywhere in the world comes to pup.

During these few crucial weeks, the arm is closed to all motorized vessels, till the majority of pups are weaned. At about this time, seals leave the area to disperse all over Alaska.
