Isabela and Fernandina Islands
This is the day that all naturalists do not wish to come to an end. Today is when all kinds of events can occur or happen. Since the very first ray of sun appeared in the horizon, we began to see an incredible amount of wildlife and scenery. Bottlenose dolphins came to bow-ride in front of our ship as we were circumnavigating Roca Redonda, which is an outcrop full of sea life.
After breakfast, the majestic presence of King Neptune and his pirates led the kids to be baptized and feel the pride of crossing the equator line, following the traditions of the ancient seamen. They were drinking “iguana blood,” and at the very end, they got a certificate that proves their crossing of the equator on board the Polaris.
Later in the morning we went for a Zodiac ride where we saw an astonishing landscape as well as some of the emblematic seabirds of this area, like the penguins and the famous flightless cormorants.
By the time we set course for our next visiting point, a pod of common dolphins came to the area and we saw a couple hundred of them jumping off the water and some females swimming next to their calves. And, as a grand finale, the walk on the island of Fernandina was so marvelous that it is hard to believe that someday we’ll have to go back to civilization.
