Espanola Island
These are Nazca Boobies looking at…people passing by? A male sea lion barking? A cleptorasitic frigate trying to steal booby chicks? Or just enjoying the ocean view? The case is that we saw these two and many other boobies along Espanola trail this morning, and they were doing all kinds of things. Some were taking care of their young hatchlings; some were incubating their eggs, some performing their courtships. The whole life cycle of Nazca boobies was witnessed by our Polaris guests. And together with boobies, we also saw albatrosses, marine iguanas in breeding colors, sea lions nursing their babies and Darwin’s finches working hard to find seeds in the ground.
In the afternoon we discovered a few more birds, but the highlights were underwater. The beginner snorkelers saw white-tipped reef sharks and sting rays, what a way to start! People who went to the deep water also encountered many schools of different fish species. Glass bottom boat guests could also learn about the underwater realm, staying dry. And even those guests who wanted to have a “floating massage” got to see some sea stars and fish while relaxing in the middle of the ocean. A day for every taste!
