Española Island

We started our day in the eastern-most part of the Galápagos. The island of Española is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful islands of this archipelago. Its incredible landscape surrounded us and the biodiversity found here overwhelmed us.

The morning was spent at Punta Suarez, located on the northwest side of the island. As soon as we landed, the amount of species found on the landing site made us believe we were seeing it all already, but as we walk along the trail, more and more species came to greet us. Birds such as the Nazca boobies and swallow-tailed gulls were jumping off the cliffs. It was impressive to see them gliding and hovering above us.

As we got closer to the blow hole, we could feel the freshness of its spray on the air. It was as powerful as ever. Tiny little drops of water fell on our faces and reminded us of the special moment that we were all experiencing.

Waved albatrosses came into sight towards the end of the trail. Year after year, this species always comes to this very island for breeding. By now, most of the adults had paired up and produced an offspring, which we all saw quite healthy, but for some unexplainable reason few of the adults (maybe juveniles coming to the island for first time) were still in mid courtship. It was a treat to see them dancing and performing the elaborate ritual that makes them famous. After the walk when we thought the surprises had ended, we found a mother sea lion feeding her young pup while she was pleasantly sleeping by the docking area. It was a lot of fun to see how our guests had to, in some cases, practically jump over the young sea lion to get to the other side to take our Zodiacs.

The afternoon was full of water activities. Our glass bottom boat was positioned in a nearby bay for the enjoyment of our non-“aquaticus” guests. Snorkeling and swimming was very pleasant and full of surprises. Beautiful fish and lot of sting rays (the good ones…) were spotted by our guests. By the end of the day, everyone had done what they wanted and revealed their happiness with a big and nice smile back on the Polaris. It was just another common day in paradise…
