Floreana Island
Just offshore Floreana Island lays a very special islet named after a famous whaler, Andrew Champion, who was around these waters some centuries ago. Water activities are unforgettable in this place; it is possible to observe many colorful fish species, sharks, rays, turtles and sea lions. Sea lions in the Galápagos are by far the favorite animals of all. Underwater, these beloved mammals always offer a great show. Galapagos sea lions are extremely playful. It seems like these acrobatic critters are waiting for people to play with them. When sea lions see snorkelers around, a fantastic show starts. An incredible interaction is created. Curious sea lions swim right up to humans showing off their innate skills. Quick turns and contortions provoke laughter making it very difficult to maintain the mouthpiece of the snorkel in place. Sometimes sea lions swim straight forward blowing bubbles in front of their astonished observers. On other occasions the cheerful sea lions even play with the fins of the swimmers having as much fun as their observers.
At the end of the day, as we were coming back to the Polaris from our afternoon walk, we enjoyed a beautiful light. On the beach we observed a group of sea lions. The light was warm, and golden. With our hearts filled with joy, we reluctantly returned to the ship.
