Floreana Island

The parched, dormant vegetation looked so gray today as we trekked through the brush of Punta Cormorant. What a delight it was for everybody to see the splash of yellow provided by the delightful yellow warbler. It popped up several times during our walk and it’s not the last we’ve seen of it either. It’s now going to appear daily on practically all of the islands and altitudes we go to. The photo depicts a female with her all over yellow plumage. The male has a red cap and red streaks down its breast.

How about a bit of pink to break up the monotonous gray! Well many of us also got to see a flamingo at very close proximity too. It was the most colorful flamingo in the lagoon, appearing almost red in hue.

The colors started earlier on today with the deep blue of the prism waters around Champion Islet. From the glass bottom boat we were able to reach visual depths of 60-70 feet…a rare feat for these waters! It was overwhelming to witness the great quantities of fish down there including a huge school of king angelfish and several sharks. At one point, we could even see one of our snorkelers below the boat filming the sharks.

The end of an exciting day was topped with glowing dolphins bow-riding in the black of the night sea. Some of the agitated plankton around the dolphins creates a bio-illuminescence, lighting up the outline of these hitchhikers. The dolphins appear truly angelic, or even ghost-like, providing a perfectly apt way to say farewell to our mysterious, colorful island.
