Española Island

Today was a very special one; we had the opportunity to observe the last Waved albatross of the season sitting close to a cliff on Punta Suarez. The Waved albatross is a sea bird species that only nest on Española Island, nowhere else in the world!

There were many other amazing creatures we saw as we walked along the trail. Some of these animals are endemic not only to the Galápagos archipelago, but to Española Island. We spotted the Española mockingbirds, the Española lava lizards and the Española marine iguanas. We were impressed by the mighty Galápagos Hawk and by the famous Darwin Finches as well. A particular sea bird species that heavily attracted our attention due to its beauty was the Nazca Boobies; we found them nesting all over the cliffs. Blue-footed Boobies were spotted as well, and we even saw a couple with recently hatched chicks!

We dedicated the afternoon to the refreshing waters of the Galápagos, practicing water activities. It couldn’t be better! We snorkeled in the middle of several schools of different colorful fish species, including Tiger snake eels. We spotted sea urchins and playful Galápagos sea lions as well. Just when we were almost finishing our snorkeling outing we had a great surprise, a school of beautiful and graceful Golden cow rays came to swim around us.

Some guests opted to kayak along Gardner Islet, while others went to Gardner Beach to stroll along a white coralline beach all covered by Galápagos sea lions.

What an experience! What a day!
