Isabela & Fernandina Islands
Our expedition brought us today to the westernmost islands of this enchanted archipelago, Isabela and Fernandina Islands. These islands are exquisite living examples of the intrinsic beauty of these remote and pristine realms.
Early in the morning we circumnavigated Roca Redonda onboard the National Geographic Polaris. Many flocks of different marine bird species were seen congregated around the rock to feed. The cold upwelling of the rich Cromwell current is the most influential current in this area. Thanks to the tremendous amount of nutrients that this current brings to the western side of the Galápagos, there is an unparalleled abundance of wildlife.
After crossing the Equator we headed to Punta Vicente Roca where we had a great Zodiac ride. This ride along the coastline was highly successful for we saw Galápagos penguins, Flightless cormorants, marine iguanas, Pacific green sea turtles, seabirds of different kinds, and the wonderful Ocean sunfish (Mola mola). Just when we thought this ride was the climax of the morning, we had a spectacular sighting. An Orca whale was spotted on the horizon. All of us were mesmerized by this exceptional marine mammal species. Expressions of joy and admiration were heard around the big orca male. It was so exciting that my heart pounded faster than usual. What a great experience!
Back onboard, we got ready for our water activities. Snorkeling was successful as well, for we spotted not only many fish species but sea turtles and Galápagos penguins.
Our ship repositioned to Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island. We had a walk on the huge black lava fields that dominate the scene. This place is as close to a dream as you can imagine. Many Galápagos sea lion pups were seen together with large numbers of marine iguanas. A cool ocean breeze accompanied us during the walk. All the impressions and feelings we accumulated this day will remain within our hearts forever. The Galápagos Islands are magical!
