Bartolome and Santiago Islands

All at once we observed: 50 white-tipped reef sharks in the shallows, green sea turtles breeding in the surf, a semi-palmated plover walking along the shoreline and a female turtle slowly making its way back to the water. Where was it? When was it? Bartolome Island, in a bright sunny morning of our last complete day in the Galápagos Islands. We had done an earlier walk, to enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the archipelago, right after sunrise. During this outing we learned more about the geologic features of these active and young islands. We spotted a few pioneer plants and finches; but the wildlife was waiting for us at the beach of Bartolome. And it was amazing, both above and underwater.

In the afternoon the wind blew strong from the southeast; it was high tide and a little overcast. But the sightings were great still. This time our guests found turtles underwater, and during the walk, oyster catchers, fur sea lions and marine iguanas. It does not matter where or when you go in the Galápagos Islands, there are always amazing sightings to discover, many new friends to meet, and lots to learn, not only about nature, but about ourselves as well.
